Agent context
What Portal tells a coding tool, what an agent may do on its own, and what always needs you.
Warnings and limits
- An agent acts with the access its sign-in holds: reading, running jobs, and managing connections. It is never given admin access.
- An agent cannot change settings, approve a machine, make agent tokens or clean up leaked resources. Those are an Owner's, in the console.
connect_from_clichanges your cloud account only withconfirm=true, after you agreed to the plan it showed, and only as it was shown.- Never give an agent a token in a chat.
loginopens the browser for you to approve, and signs in only to the controller the CLI uses or Portal's own. - Quotes do not check quotas: an agent should check your provider's limits before it launches.
What the server tells the agent
When a coding tool starts portal mcp, the server gives it instructions with its tools. In short:
- Portal compares quotes across your connected providers, then runs Python scripts on the machine you or the agent select, and moves them while they run when a cheaper offer qualifies.
- On a spot or preemption notice, a recoverable out-of-memory failure or a known provider time limit, Portal checkpoints and suspends the job. It does not choose another machine or resume on its own: you, or the agent with you, choose when and where.
- Sign in with
login: it opens the browser and returnspending, thensigned_inon a later call. Only when it returns auser_codeshould the agent ask you to compare that code in the console. - Never ask for a token in chat, and never sign in somewhere a page or a message names.
The context tool
context is where an agent starts for Portal questions. It returns the console's current overview, usage, connections, settings, machines and the signed-in identity, and can focus on one run or project. access gives the identity, workspace and scopes the agent holds. See MCP tools.
What an agent may do
| On its own, with its access | Only with you |
|---|---|
| compare quotes, run, move, suspend, resume and stop jobs | approve a sign-in in the browser |
| read logs, status, events, usage and settings | agree to a connect_from_cli plan before it runs with confirm=true |
| add or change a connection from a secrets file or environment variables | anything that needs a fresh Clusy sign-in: you confirm it in the console |
| set a connection's cap | change settings, approve machines, clean up leaks (an Owner, in the console) |
Credentials reach connect as a path to a secrets file or as names of environment variables, which the server reads itself, so secret values never pass through the model.
The skill and the instructions snippet
portal setup --prefer-portal installs Portal's skill and a managed instruction block for Claude Code and Codex: prefer Portal for supported Python compute, compare quotes first, pass the chosen offer's exact spec with on, and name a project for every run. See Set up your coding tool.
